Everyone will have to go through career changes sometime in their life, and it’s time you learn it NOW.
Here is a quick 5 steps guide that you can follow to make a successful career change.
Step 1 – Self-evaluate
Spend time with yourself, take time to understand your core needs, reflect on times when you what really made you happiest. Many of us are corrupted by social expectations, monotonous routines, unhealthy mental habits, and have morphed into altered versions of ourselves. Find areas where you feel disconnected from your authentic self.
Step 2 – Build around yourself
Think about people whom you can count on for support during this transition. Build a team around yourself that can lift your spirits when you fall. Work strategically around building relationships with people at work and outside too. Keep in touch with people even when you don’t need them, this leads to a more meaningful relationship. Remember people even when you don’t need them, this shows them that you care genuinely.
Step 3 – Facts VS Assumptions
A pigeon in hand is better than two in a bush, the grass is greener on the other side and many other idioms confirm there is always more than what meets the eye. Assumptions are uncertain predictions and can limit your career opportunities, and even slow you down. You need well-researched, facts-driven methodology when giving new shape to your career. Observation is the key to make the right decision, so when you are hitting the new road it will be good to consider facts instead of just going by the assumptions.
Step 4 – Strategic use of Social Media
Use multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Mynga to target individuals, groups, forums that you will need to pivot your career. Seek career advice, learn from their experiences, ask about your doubts etc. You can use the same platform to show your skills too and stay connected with potential recruiters.
Don’t be surprised when we tell you that your best connections can come from people outside your work too. Be creative in finding new connections and imagine how they can be helpful in your career.
Step 5 – Ask questions
It completely makes sense to ask for directions when you are heading into new territory. Everyone needs a plan to pivot and succeed in their career. It can be hard in the beginning, to ask for help every time you feel stuck but gradually it gets easier.
When I went off to teaching dance to kids, I was bad at it rather, I almost sucked at it. Start with admitting that you need help, and once you extend yourself to learn and seek help, you will find the answers.
